Live Review: Only The Poets in Glasgow

Alternative pop-indie sensation Only The Poets gave Glasgow concertgoers a stimulating set at G2 on Thursday 22nd August.

Kicking off their highly anticipated UK and Europe tour celebrating the release of their One More Night EP, the guitar-pop quartet opened their set with their 2023 hit single Crash. Originally from Reading, lead vocalist Tommy Longhurst announced the band’s special love for playing in Glasgow, before playing some fan favourite singles including ‘Gone By Now’ and ‘All This Time’.

Having previously supported big names such as Lewis Capaldi and Louis Tomlinson, Only The Poets have crafted an authentic indie-rock sound that could best suit fans of The Script, The 1975 and 5 Seconds of Summer. It’s no wonder that Only The Poets have skyrocketed in popularity, with their ‘One More Night’ single now reaching over one million streams on Spotify.

Support from Kerr Mercer, an up-and-coming Glaswegian singer, warmed up the crowd with a selection of songs along with a cover of ‘Please, Please, Please’ by Sabrina Carpenter. Mercer is hosting his own Glasgow headline show at St Luke’s, on 1st October 2024.

Only The Poets’ headline set at G2 also included several special moments that enhanced the emotional connection between the audience and the band. Longhurst left a touching message to the crowd with advice to look out for each other before playing ‘It’s Okay (Not To Be Okay)’, advocating to normalise talking about mental health. This effortlessly raw authenticity was felt both from the stage as well as within the audience, creating feelings of community.

However, the most special highlight was an up close and personal performance of their unreleased demo ‘Black and Blue’. The band warmly invited the crowd to join them in middle of the pit, where they announced it would be released at midnight on Friday 23rd August alongside their deluxe version of One More Night. This was exceptionally unique to Glasgow attendees who heard it live only hours before its official release.

The One More Night tour is set to finish in Bratislava, followed by two additional Halloween dates in Rotterdam.
