Beabadoobee’s unforgettable first headlining show at Alexandra Palace

On the morning of Thursday 21 st November, fans admirably began queueing at Alexandra Palace inntemperatures as low as -1°C to get as close to the stage as possible for indie-pop talent Beabadoobee’s sold out London date of her This Is How Tomorrow Moves Tour. With this show being the final one of the UK leg, as well as the singer’s hometown show, attendees were in for a very special night.

Doors for the gig opened not long before 7pm and, half an hour later, the tour’s support act Momma took to the stage to perform a 30 minute set consisting of their own songs – a mixture of tracks from their most recent album, as well as some newer and unreleased singles. The band’s musical style evidently aligned perfectly with Beabadoobee fans’ tastes, with the crowd jumping and dancing around from the very start until the end of their set. Momma beautifully set the tone for the evening and engaged the audience, preparing them for the soon-to-come main set.

As 8:30pm hit, Beabadoobee arrived on stage, fittingly wearing a gorgeous Union Jack-inspired jacket & skirt set. Opening with ‘California’, a standout upbeat track from her latest album This Is How Tomorrow Moves, the artist lit up the 10,000-capacity room instantly. She followed this up by transitioning smoothly into ‘Talk’ and ’10:36’ from her sophomore album Beatopia, as well as a fan-favourite oldie ‘Charlie Brown’. Beabadoobee’s vocals, matched with her band’s energy and performance, were phenomenal; sounding even more impactful than the original recordings, and giving the tracks all secondary lives. The lighting also perfectly complemented the music, especially with songs like ‘Charlie Brown’ which felt particularly cinematic and complete.

Beabadoobee then returned to playing some newer tracks from the touring album, including lead single ‘Take A Bite’ and third single ‘Ever Seen’ – which both received a lot of love from the crowd. In introducing her track ‘Real Man’, the singer gave a sweet shoutout to her partner who was in the audience – naming him her “real man” – before delivering a stunning performance and even incorporating a portion of the dance that has gone viral on TikTok of the song’s outro. This was then following up strongly with hit single ‘Glue Song’, in which the audience was singing the lyrics just as loudly as they were being performed, and had the whole venue lit up with phone torches waving around.

Beabadoobee took a short pause here to thank everyone for attending, informing the crowd that it was her first time returning to Ally Pally since attending her first ever gig there aged 16, making the event feel even more special for the entire audience. The singer began to tear up thanking fans for sticking around, before introducing the next song ‘Coffee’ as “the song where it all started”. ‘Coffee’ received a heavenly acoustic performance which felt very homely in the audience and made everyone feel like a family reminiscing on Beabadoobee’s older work, which had got her to the position of performing at such a large and iconic venue. This was then followed up with another beautifully emotional track ‘Girl Song’, performed by the singer and just one other band member on the piano.

After playing another album track ‘One Time’, Beabadoobee introduced her single ‘Beaches’ as her favourite song of her own. The vocals and music itself were captivating and felt truly magical, along with the reveal towards the end of the song of a new backdrop of beautiful green foliage. The stage transformed completely into a new aesthetic that matched both the song and the artist’s vibe perfectly. She went on to end the main set with a few older tracks from a mix of her debut album Fake It Flowers, and various singles and EPs from the beginning of her career.

Beabadoobee returned to the stage after this for an acoustic encore that truly completed the night. Beginning this set with recent single ‘Coming Home’, the audience once again felt like a family as everyone collectively joined in humming along to the song’s melody unprompted, with solely the guitar as backing music – defining this performance as a standout moment of the show. Another standout moment followed as the singer performed yet another acoustic single ‘the way things go’ which, despite her expressing some distaste for the song while introducing it, was angelically played with fans in the crowd tearing up all around.

As per usual for Beabadoobee, she closed out the show with her song ‘See You Soon’ before exiting the stage and the house lights lifting signalling the crowd to go home.

With a strong connection to her fans through her music & lyrics, as well as authentic presence and relatable personality, it is evident that Beabadoobee is a performer like no other.
